Japanese maple update

This winter we had two blizzards within a week of one another. The snow on our front yard was about 2 feet deep, maybe more. At any rate it covered the maple which was only 2 years old. After the snow melted away we could see that every branch on the tree was stripped off. The largest branch was broken with only a layer of bark holding it to the tree.

This picture shows where I’ve duct taped the limb to the main trunk. The tree has leafed (is that term correct?), and who knows? This is now officially an experiment. The tree was a birthday present and I love it. They are so beautiful, I’m hoping it can come back to some degree of its former self. Does anyone know anything about grafting? Is this what I’ve done?
